The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The The Metropolitan Museum of Art website functions as an expansive virtual repository and visitor platform that showcases an encyclopedic permanent collection of more than 1.5 million art objects and artifacts. Main features of the platform include an interactive online database indexing 17 distinct curatorial departments—ranging from Ancient Egyptian art to modern photography—as well as specialized research libraries, complete publication catalogs, and the renowned Timeline of Art History. Under its Open Access initiative, the website provides free, downloadable, high-resolution imagery for hundreds of thousands of public-domain artworks. Serving an international audience of museum visitors, art collectors, educators, and historians, the site delivers substantial practical value by offering advanced search filters for academic inquiry, localized ticketing tools, floor maps, and live calendars for rotating physical exhibitions, workshops, and musical performances.
