Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur

The Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur website, maintained by the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, operates as a comprehensive visual repository tracking cultural heritage assets. The platform indexes over two million images from hundreds of participating museums, archives, and universities, cataloging paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, and monumental buildings. Key features include integrated geographic, chronological, and thematic search indices that cross-reference historical structures with detailed object metadata and photographic documentation. Serving an audience of art historians, architectural researchers, preservationists, and students, the database provides high practical value by centralizing fragmented institutional archives into a free, searchable resource for spatial, iconographical, and provenance research.
